Picking up from my last post (a while ago) and another (even longer ago) about creating cards and templates, I took another initial step, which was to just write up the cards on some simple blank cards I bought online that were roughly poker sized.
They were so unexciting to look at, but great for something much more important – testing the rules worked in actual gameplay rather than just simulations.
So how did it help me to have these rough handwritten cards?
- I played with myself several times which sounds odd of course. This was extremely useful to make sure the game loop worked – not that it was fun, but actually worked.
- It allowed me to play through with early rules with some trusting friends. That way I was able to refine the rules (I still am even at a much later stage and doubt I’ll stop tinkering even after release).
- Gave me ideas of what actually needed to be on cards and what was superfluous.
- Allowed me to cross of some initial ideas for cards (originally Senator cards were name with more text – that didn’t work)
Bottom line take away for me and only advice I’d give is that this is the fastest and best way to try out your ideas. They don’t need to be perfect before playing – in fact, they shouldn’t.
